Water filter jug - expensive and ineffective?

ree

When it comes to clean, safe, and great-tasting drinking water, not all filtration methods are created equal.

Many households start with pitcher-style water filters because they seem inexpensive and convenient. But over time, it becomes clear that pitcher filters are an underwhelming—and even expensive—solution compared to more advanced systems.

Filtration

Pitcher filters typically use a small amount of granular activated carbon. Because of their size and design, they have limited contact time with water. This means they can reduce chlorine taste and odor, but they struggle with more stubborn contaminants such as:

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

  • Lead and heavy metals

  • Pharmaceuticals and pesticides

  • Microplastics

  • PFOA, PFNA

Water jugs have long been an easy go-to solution for removing the unpleasant chlorine taste in drinking water. Today, however, chlorine should not be your only concern. Over the last 20 years, our drinking water has seen a massive increase in impurities from pesticides, heavy metals, PFAS chemicals, drug residues, and more. These are all contaminants where pitcher filters fall short and have almost no effect.

Inconvenient

One of the biggest frustrations with pitcher filters—besides poor filtration—is their speed. Filling the reservoir takes time, and if your household drinks a lot of water, you’ll find yourself constantly waiting, refilling, and juggling fridge space.

Most pitcher filters need replacing every 1–2 months. Not only is this inconvenient, but the ongoing cost of cartridges can quickly add up—often surpassing the price of a higher-performance under-sink system. Replacement cartridges can easily cost you more than €50 per year.

Why we don’t sell water filter jugs

These are the main reasons we do not sell water filter jugs. We aim to offer only solutions that we know will actually filter your water to a high level—providing real protection for you and your family against the many impurities present in drinking water today.

What is the alternative?

Of course, we would not tell you to avoid water filter jugs only to recommend an alternative costing hundreds of euros. Instead, we offer solutions like our Coco Light, which provides a space-saving and discreet under-sink installation with instant clean water and high flow.

It uses a coconut-based activated carbon block cartridge, delivering high-performance water filtration for as little as €49.00—including cartridges for the first 24 months! And when you actually need new cartridges, they cost just €5.95 per year (in chlorinated water).

This gives you a much more practical solution with far higher filtration performance and much lower running costs—ensuring you always have clean, healthy water free from chlorine, chlorine by-products, pesticides, microplastics, PFOA, PFNA, and 100+ other impurities.
